Just read this article on how giving children chores early makes them successful adults. I hate using the word "chore" though. I knew that toddlers/preschoolers learn by imitating, so I'd let my son sweep, do dishes, put his laundry in the washer, help fold from as early as 2yrs (he's now 5).
